FENWAY HAWK’S NEW NAME STRIKES FEAR IN YANKEE FANS
Lowell Spinners and Inside Track Select “Striker” as “Name the Hawk” Winner
LOWELL, Mass. – The fans have spoken and thrown a perfect “Strike” in determining a name for Fenway’s infamous hawk.
As part of a joint promotion, the Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, and the Boston Hearld’s “Inside Track” received numerous submissions with fans most creative ideas for the hawk’s new moniker. After much deliberation, “Striker” was selected as the ultimate choice, making winners out of Caroline, Lucy, Sarah and Stephen Davis of Sudbury, Mass.
Fenway has been host to several legendary hawks over the years from Andre “The Hawk” Dawson to Ken “Hawk” Harrleson. The Red-Tailed Hawk becomes the latest to patrol the Fenway grounds.
“Striker was an entry that stood out above the rest of the entries,” said Lowell Spinners Vice President/General Manager Tim Bawmann. “Short, but sweet, it is certainly a perfect strike.”
In an effort to name the now infamous hawk, the Spinners partnered with the Boston Herald’s Inside Track to offer fans a chance to name the bird. For having their entry selected, Caroline, Lucy, Sarah and Stephen will win a great prize pack featuring a pair of tickets to a Red Sox/Yankees game, tickets to a Spinners game against the Staten Island Yankees and the opportunity to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at LeLacheur Park.
"Striker is a great name for our Fenway Hawk who strikes fear into the hearts of Yankee lovers everywhere,'' said Gayle Fee of the Boston Herald's Inside Track.
"Sort of like the Track," added Laura Raposa.
The Spinners have lined up a Red-Tailed Hawk for fans to see in-person at the August 4 game through Jonathan Wood and his Raptor Project. Seats are still available and can be purchased through the Lowell Spinners ticket office by calling (978) 459-2255, visiting www.lowellspinners.com or visiting the box office at the ballpark, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
