Spinners Eliminated from Playoff
Chase
Hagadone
continues to shine despite walk-off loss
BROOKLYN, NY – Spinners starter and Red Sox No. 1 Draft Pick Nick
Hagadone finished his stellar season in style, striking out six in three
scoreless innings, but the Spinners lost to the Cyclones, 3-1, on Wednesday
night in the first game of the final three-game series of the season.
The loss eliminated
Lowell from the playoffs, pushing the Spinners four games
behind Oneonta in the Stedler Division with just two games to play.
Hagadone extended his
franchise-best streak of consecutive scoreless innings pitched to 23, finishing
the season with a 1.85 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 24.1 innings of work and having
not allowing a run to cross the plate in nine consecutive outings dating back
to his second start of the season on July 24.
Both teams put up zeros
until the eighth inning, when Lowell (40-34) finally brought in the first run of the game.
Ryan Dent reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second before scoring on a
line drive single to left-field by Che-Hsuan Lin.
Brooklyn (47-25) matched the Spinners with a run of its own in
the bottom of the eighth, sending runners to second and third with a single,
sacrifice bunt, error, and fielder’s choice before an RBI single to left-field
by Micah Schilling. The inning ended on the same play as Rafael Cabreja caught
Ezequiel Carrera, who had been at first, between second and third base.
After the Spinners went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, Cyclone Matthew Bouchard
followed a Lucas Duda single with a walk-off homerun to left-field.
Lowell’s offense had a tough task coming into the game
facing the league’s best pitcher, Dylan Owen, who struck out eleven Spinners
while lowering his ERA to a league-low 1.49 mark. Lowell pitching was also outstanding, striking out sixteen
Cyclones in the pitcher’s duel. Only one walk, by Hagadone in the second
inning, was handed out all game.
Spinners reliever Adam Blackley matched Hagadone with
five scoreless innings and eight strikeouts of his own. Scott Lonergan (1-1)
took the loss after entering in the ninth inning. He recorded two strikeouts.
Reigning New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week,
Lowell’s Jordan Craft (7-3, 3.43 ERA), gets the start in Thursday night’s
penultimate game of the Spinners season, a 7:05 p.m. match-up at Brooklyn.
