No Comeback Tonight

Lowell can't build upon previous night, lose 8-2

ONEONTA, NY – The Oneonta Tigers scored three runs in the second inning and again in the sixth, capitalizing on sloppy play by the Lowell Spinners as the Tigers defeated the Spinners on Wednesday night, 8-2.

With the loss, the Spinners fell to two games behind Oneonta for the Stedler Division lead with nine games left to play.

Lowell (37-30) seemed ready to capitalize on the previous game’s momentum, scoring a run in the first inning when Che-Hsuan Lin led off the game with a single, stole second, took third on a groundout by Carlos Fernandez-Oliva and scored on a groundout by Oscar Tejeda.

Oneonta (39-28) tied the score in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by first baseman Chris Carlson. The Tigers padded the lead with three runs in the fourth on an RBI single and errors by Deshaun Brooks and Rafael Cabreja.

The Spinners cut the deficit to two runs in the top of the fourth as David Marks laced a single that was misplayed by Oneonta centerfielder Chris White and scored Cabreja. But, that was as close as Lowell would get as the Tigers scored three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to put the game well out of reach.

Lowell starter Jose Capellan was hit hard by the highest-scoring lineup in the New York-Penn League, and he allowed seven runs, five earned, on nine hits in five and two-third innings. Adam Mills allowed one run in an inning and a third while Eric Beattie pitched a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout.

The Spinners pieced together just five hits, with two players picking up two hits each. Lin and Marks each went 2-for-4, raising Marks’ batting average to .421 in his last six starts and 30 points overall. Brooks picked up the other Spinners hit.

Lowell returns home for their last homestand of the season, a two-game series with the Tri-City ValleyCats, the final home games of Lowell’s home season. Thursday night is Notebook Giveaway and Royal Caribbean and Garavanian Travel will be giving away a cruise to benefit the Joann Weber and Lustgarten Foundation.

Miguel Socolovich (4-3, 3.61) gets the start and hopes to keep the Spinners in the playoff hunt for tomorrow’s 7:05 p.m. start. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and standing room tickets are available.
