Spinners Suffer Heartbreak Again

Lowell rally falls short in late innings to lose 2-1

LOWELL, MA – The Staten Island Yankees scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning and withstood furious Spinners rallies in final two innings to defeat the Lowell Spinners 2-1 on Monday night on Luis Alicea Three-Ring Binder Night, sponsored by RTN Federal Credit Union, Pepsi, Sal’s Pizza and AJ Wright.

Despite the loss, the Spinners remained two games back of Stedler Division leader Oneonta.

Staten Island (38-25) scored first in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by shortstop Justin Snyder.

Lowell (36-29) tied the game in the home half of the seventh inning when Jorge Jimenez, who walked to lead off the inning, scored on an RBI double off of the right field wall by TD Banknorth Player of the Game Rafael Cabreja.

The Yankees took the lead right back in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by Snyder, and Spinners rallies in the eighth and ninth could not produce any runs. Lowell left the tying and winning runs on at second and third in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Spinners starter Jordan Craft had an outstanding outing, allowing just an unearned run on just two hits in six innings with six strikeouts and no walks. Tony Bajoczky (0-1) took the loss, giving up one run on two hits in two and one-third innings. Carlos Gonzalez worked out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing two groundouts in the ninth inning. Lowell’s staff allowed only four hits and two walks.

Cabreja and David Marks each had two hits to lead Lowell’s offense, which managed six hits in the pitcher’s duel. Carlos Fernandez-Oliva and Ty Weeden had the other hits for Lowell.

Just two games behind the division-leading Oneonta Tigers, Lowell heads to Oneonta for an important two-game series beginning tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. Lowell’s Felix Doubront (0-2, 6.75) gets the start.
