Spinners Can't Close the Door

Lowell bullpen loses five-run lead

LOWELL, MA – The Staten Island Yankees scored seven runs in the eighth and ninth innings to erase an early five-run deficit as Lowell Spinners fell 9-6 on Disney Night.

With the loss, the Spinners fell to two games behind wild-card leader Staten Island and two games behind Stedler Division leader Oneonta.

For the second game in a row, Lowell (36-28) ran out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the second inning. Brett Lewis knocked in a run with a bunt single and Oscar Tejeda hit a double into the right-center gap that scored two.

Staten Island (37-25) got on the board in the top of the fourth when catcher Jose Gil homered off the right field foul pole.

Lowell continued to push out to a five-run advantage in the fifth inning. Tejeda tripled to deep left field and scored on a Yamaico Navarro single, and after the Spinners loaded the bases, Kade Keowen reached on an error by the Yankees’ shortstop to score two more runs.

The Yankees cut into the lead in the sixth with a run and then, with the help pf a two-run single by pinch-hitter Chris Raber and a two-run error by Tejeda, added six runs in the eighth inning.

Staten Island added one more in the ninth inning to complete the scoring.

TD Banknorth Player of the Game and Spinners starting pitcher Nick Hagadone pitched his seventh straight scoreless outing, allowing just two hits and striking out four in three innings. Adam Blackley allowed two runs on four hits in three innings of long relief, striking out four.

Ryne Lawson (4-4) picked up the tough loss, allowing five runs in an inning and a third, while Felix Ventura gave up two runs on three hits in an inning and two-thirds.

Tejeda continued to impress with polished hitting, going 3-for-5 and falling a homerun short of the cycle. Six other Spinner hitters had a hit each as Lowell racked up nine hits for the second game in a row.

Lowell looks to take the rubber game of this vital three-game series tomorrow night on Luis Alicea Three-Ring Binder Giveaway, sponsored by Pepsi, AJ Wright, Sal’s Pizza and RTN Federal Credit Union. Jordan Craft (6-3, 4.20) takes the ball in search of his seventh win at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and standing room tickets are available.
