Spinners Can't Hold Lead

Lowell loses early advantage, falls 6-5

LOWELL, MA – The Lowell Spinners couldn’t hold a four-run lead and the Aberdeen IronBirds withstood a furious ninth-inning comeback as the Spinners fell, 6-5, on Johnny Pesky Bobblehead Night, sponsored by Tyco Electronics and Collins Dentistry.

With the loss, the Spinners fell to 1.5 games behind Stedler Division leader Oneonta, who was rained out.

Lowell (34-27) opened the scoring in the bottom of the third as Jorge Jimenez knocked in a run with a bases-loaded groundout. The Spinners tacked on one more in the bottom of the fourth when TD Banknorth Player of the Game Brett Lewis singled in a run.

Lowell padded the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on an error and a sacrifice fly by Jimenez to take a 4-0 lead.

But Aberdeen (28-33) came roaring back in the top of the seventh, tying the game with four runs, the big blast a 3-run homer by second baseman Ryan Adams.

The IronBirds climbed ahead in the top of the ninth with two runs off of Spinner reliever Carlos Gonzalez, but the Spinners staged a rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run on a wild pitch and putting the tying run on second before pinch-hitter Ty Weeden struck out to end the rally and the game.

Felix Doubront had his second strong outing at LeLacheur Park, tossing five one-hit innings. Eammon Portice did not fare as well out of the bullpen, allowing four runs on five hits in two innings. Gonzalez (0-1), in his home debut for Lowell, picked up the loss, allowing two runs in two innings.

Rafael Cabreja was 3-for-4, pacing an 11-hit attack for the Spinners offense. Carlos Fernandez-Oliva, Yamaico Navarro and Kade Keowen each had two hits, with Fernandez-Oliva continuing to raise his average among league leaders at .317. Lewis and Pedro Vasquez each had a hit, with Lewis reaching base in his 11th consecutive game.

Lowell looks to take the rubber game of the series tomorrow night on Uncut Card Sheet Giveaway, sponsored by Pepsi, Jay Gee’s Ice Cream, Stevens Business Service, Nashua Telegraph, Kelly’s Services and Sal’s Pizza. Jose Capellan (4-2, 3.09) gets the start for Gary DiSarcina’s club. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Standing room tickets are available.
