What a Thrill!

Fernandez-Oliva's walk-off homerun give Spins 3-2 win

LOWELL, MA – Carlos Fernandez-Oliva stroked a homerun over the Fio’s Pizza and Butler Bank signs in right-center field with one out in the tenth inning, sending the Lowell Spinners to a 3-2 walk-off victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Oreo Cookie Night, sponsored by Oreo. With the win, the Spinners climbed into a tie with the Lake Monsters for second place in the Stedler Division.

For the third night in a row, Vermont (31-25) took an early lead in the top of the third inning, tonight on a two-run double by right fielder Aaron Seuss.

Lowell (31-25) got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning when Kade Keowen and Rafael Cabreja walked and Will Vazquez hit a double to deep center field to score Cabreja.

The Spinners tied the game in the bottom of the ninth when pinch hitter Yamaico Navarro reached base on an error, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Cabreja tied the game up on a sacrifice fly that barely scored Navarro.

In the tenth inning, TD Banknorth Player of the Game Fernandez-Oliva blasted a 1-0 pitch for his first homerun in 368 at-bats split between Lowell and Low-A Greenville.

Spinners starter Jose Capellan continued his hot pitching at LeLacheur Park, allowing two runs in five innings with four strikeouts. In eight starts this season at home, Capellan has a 1.88 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 43 innings. Adam Mills twirled three scoreless innings of relief, giving up three hits while striking out four. Willy Mota (3-3) picked up the win with two scoreless innings to close out the game.

Cabreja paced the Spinner hitters with a 2-for-2 night, walking once with two doubles. Fernandez-Oliva, Vazquez, and Oscar Tejeda had Lowell’s other hits to give the Spinners five total hits in the ten-inning contest.

The Spinners head out on the road for a brief two-day, three-game road trip at Tri-City tomorrow night. Miguel Socolovich (2-3, 4.08) starts Game 1 and Ryne Lawson (4-2, 5.08) is the probable starter for Game 2. The first game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
