Spinners Hold Off Lake Monsters

Lowell's pitching guides Spinners to fourth consecutive win

LOWELL, MA – Spinner pitchers allowed three runs to score on wild pitches and the offense could not mount a late-inning comeback as the Vermont Lake Monsters defeated the Lowell Spinners, 5-2, on Bucket Hat Giveaway, sponsored by the IBEW. With the loss, the Spinners dropped one game behind Vermont and into third place in the Stedler Division.

Vermont (31-24) took an early lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI groundout. Lowell (30-25) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as TD Banknorth Player of the Game Jorge Jimenez singled in Carlos Fernandez-Oliva.

The Spinners pulled ahead in the bottom of the seventh, getting things started when Fernandez-Oliva and Pedro Vasquez both singled with one out. Jimenez advanced both runners with a groundout, and Fernandez-Oliva scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

The lead was short-lived as Vermont tied the game in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch by Eammon Portice (0-2) and took the lead one batter later on an error. The Lake Monsters added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth, scoring both runs on wild pitches.

Felix Doubront had his best start as a member of the Spinners, allowing one run on three hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked two. Portice gave up two runs in three innings of middle relief, walking three and throwing two wild pitches. Eric Beattie struggled in the ninth inning, allowing two runs on one hit, with two walks and two wild pitches.

Fernandez-Oliva and Jimenez each had two hits, with Fernandez-Oliva picking up his second two-hit game in as many nights. Vasquez, Yamaico Navarro, Brett Lewis and David Marks collected a hit each and the Spinners banged out eight hits for the second night in a row.

The Spinners close out their four-game homestand tomorrow night on Oreo Cookie Night. Jose Capellan (4-2, 3.05) looks to take bite out of the Vermont Lake Monsters as gates open at 3:30 p.m. and there are standing room tickets available.
