Spinners Hold Off Lake Monsters
Lowell's
pitching guides Spinners to fourth consecutive win
LOWELL, MA – Four Spinner pitchers worked out of numerous jams,
stranding 13 Lake Monsters as Lowell defeated Vermont, 3-1, on Clydesdale and Bud Bowl Commercial Night,
sponsored by Budweiser. With the win, the Spinners gained a half-game on
Stedler Division leading Oneonta and tied Vermont for second place in the division.
Vermont
(30-24) took an early lead in the top of the third inning when third baseman
Anthony Benner homered on the first pitch of the inning.
Lowell
(30-24) came right back in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs
on three hits. Yamaico Navarro singled and advanced to second on an error.
After a Rafael Cabreja walk, Brett Lewis laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance
the runners.
One
out later, Oscar Tejeda, in his first game since a promotion from the Gulf
Coast League Red Sox, singled to score Navarro before Carlos Fernandez-Oliva
followed with an RBI single to score Cabreja. Tejeda scored two pitches later
on a passed ball.
Lowell
starter Jordan Craft allowed one run on four hits in four and one third
innings, striking out six and walking three. He could not garner the victory,
reaching his pitch count and departing in the middle of the fifth. Scott
Lonergan (1-0) pitched out of a jam in the fifth and picked up his first
professional victory with an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief.
Adam
Blackley, the TD Banknorth Player of the Game, struck out two in two scoreless
innings, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning. Felix Ventura
picked up his team-leading 13th save with a scoreless ninth.
Fernandez-Oliva
and Navarro led the offense with two hits each, part of an eight-hit effort for
the Spinners. Lewis, Tejeda, Pedro Vasquez and Jorge Jimenez each had one hit.
The
Spinners look to take game three of this vital four-game set with the
Lake
Monsters tomorrow night on Bucket
Hat Giveaway, sponsored by the IBEW and NECA. Felix Doubront (0-1, 12.60) toes
the rubber for the home club. Gates open at 3:30
p.m. for the 5:05 p.m.
start and standing room tickets available.
