Spinners, Hagadone Dish It Out

Lowell wins third in a row, 7-3

LOWELL, MA – TD Banknorth Player of the Game Nick Hagadone sparkled in his home debut and Rafael Cabreja knocked in three runs as the Lowell Spinners defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters, 7-3, on Pet Dish Giveaway Night, sponsored by Courier, MassBank, Belvidere Veterinary Hospital and LoJack. With the win, the Spinners climbed closer to Stedler Division rivals Vermont and Oneonta.

Lowell (29-24) scored in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs to take a lead they would not relinquish. Carlos Fernandez-Oliva walked, advanced to second on a balk and scored on a single by Jorge Jimenez. Rafael Cabreja hit a sacrifice fly to score Jimenez a few batters later to give the Spinners the early advantage.

The Spinners tacked on two more runs in the top of the third as Cabreja tripled to deep centerfield, a ball that went over the head off Vermont (30-23) centerfielder Mark Gildea. Gildea crashed into the wall on the play and left the game with an apparent head injury.

The Lake Monsters cut the lead to one run in the top of the fourth inning with three runs before Lowell pulled away, scoring a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

Hagadone twirled three scoreless innings in his longest start of the season, striking out three batters without allowing a baserunner, running his scoreless inning streak to 11 innings to lower his ERA to 3.65.

Ryne Lawson (4-2) picked up the victory with four innings of long relief, allowing three runs on four hits. Willy Mota finished the night with two scoreless innings, striking out two. Mota has not been scored upon in his last five outings.

Jimenez paced the offense with a 3-for-4 night, scoring two runs and picking up his team-leading 14th double. Fernandez-Oliva, Cabreja, Kade Keowen, Deshaun Brooks, and Will Vazquez each had one hit. Brooks continued an impressive streak of scoring a run in each game in which he records a hit with his 12th hit and 12th run scored tonight.

The Spinners look to keep rolling tomorrow night on Clydesdale/Bud Bowl Night, sponsored by Budweiser. Immediately following tomorrow night’s game, the Spinners will show the “lost” Bud Bowl commercial from 1989 on the Pepsi ProStar Video Board. Jordan Craft (5-3, 4.62) takes the ball from manager Gary DiSarcina as gates open at 5:30 p.m. and there are standing room tickets available.
