Spinners Walk Off With Fenway Win

Lowell breaks tie in ninth for 2-1 victory at Fenway Park

LOWELL, MA – After leaving eleven runners on base during the first eight innings of the game, the Lowell Spinners walked off with a 2-1 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades at Saturday afternoon’s second annual “Futures at Fenway” double-header at Fenway Park.

With the game tied at one apiece in the bottom of the ninth inning, Lowell’s Jorge Jimenez capped off a 3-for-5 afternoon with a single just over the head of the Hudson Valley (22-29) right fielder to drive in Luis Segovia from second base for the win.

Spinners ace Jose Capellan twirled a gem at Boston’s ballpark, pitching the first six innings and allowing only one unearned run while striking out six.

The only trouble Capellan ran into came in the first inning, but without any hard-hit balls. Renegades lead-off hitter Emeel Salem reached on an infield single back to the pitcher. Salem scored on a sacrifice fly sandwiched between two Spinners errors and the 1-0 score held until the bottom of the eighth inning.

Lowell (27-24) failed to capitalize on early baserunners. Carlos Fenandez-Oliva led off the game with a single but was cut down trying to steal second base. Kade Keowen singled to lead off the second inning and Ty Weeden walked two batters later to put runners on first and second, but the Spinners were again unable to score.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Lowell threatened again, loaded the bases on a Jorge Jimenez single, a double ripped down the left-field line by Kade Keowen, and a walk by Will Vazquez. But Rafael Cabreja left the bases loaded with a ground out.

Lowell again left the bases loaded in the seventh inning. Ty Weeden began the inning with a single up the middle before pinch-hitter Yamaico Navarro was hit by a pitch. The baserunners moved up to third and second on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Segovia before Pedro Vasquez grounded back to the pitcher for an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play.

The Spinners got on the board in the eighth when, two batters after Jimenez belted a double to right-center, Bret Lewis knocked Jimenez in with an RBI single to tie the game.

Spinners reliever Adam Mills followed Capellan and picked up the win. He struck out three batters in three scoreless innings.

Along with Jimenez’ three hits, and Lewis’ RBI single, Kade Keowen enjoyed a two-hit game, including a double. Ty Weeden picked up Lowell’s other hit.

Lowell and Hudson Valley match-up again tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. at LeLacheur Park. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. and standing room tickets are available.
