Spinners Handcuffed

Spinners experience Fenway hangover, shut-out for third time in five games, 4-0

LOWELL, MA – Hudson Valley starter Tyree Hayes tossed a complete-game four hitter, silencing the Lowell offense as the Spinners fell 4-0 to the Renegades in front of 5,030 fans on Kids’ Baseball Glove Giveaway, sponsored by the Local IBEW 103 and NECA.

The loss was the Spinners’ fourth loss in the last five games, and it was the third time the Spinners have been shutout in the last week.

Hudson Valley (28-24) got all the offense it would need in the second inning as leftfielder Kyeong Kang drove a ball deep over the right field wall that bounced onto Aiken St. for a two-run homerun.

The Renegades added single runs in the fifth and ninth inning, both on sacrifice flies, to complete the scoring.

Lowell (26-24) had just one runner reach second base, courtesy of a second-inning double by Luis Sumoza.

Hunter Strickland (4-3, 4.32) picked up the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits in five innings. He struck out four but did not walk a batter, his second start in a row without a base on balls. Chad Rhoades, making his fourth appearance on a rehab appearance from Portland, pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out four as well. Dan Buller gave up Hudson Valley’s final run in the ninth inning.

Four different players had hits for Lowell tonight, led by TD Banknorth Player of the Game Tim Federowicz, who impressed once again with his defense, throwing out a runner at second and picking a runner off at first.

Lowell closes out the homestand tomorrow night on Tom Glavine 300th Win Bobblehead Night, sponsored by O’Connor True Value and Stelio’s Family Restaurant. Kyle Weiland (2-2, 1.70) makes his sixth start of the season as gates open at 5:30 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
