Spinners Cool Off with Weather
Brooklyn snaps Spinners six-game winning streak, 7-0
LOWELL, MA – The Brooklyn Cyclones broke open a close game with three runs in the ninth inning, sending the Lowell Spinners to just their third loss in the last 15 games on an unusually cool August night, 7-0, in front of 5,030 fans on Diamond Dig Night, sponsored by Cooper Jewelers.
With an Oneonta loss to Staten Island, however, the Spinners maintained a 3.5 game lead atop the Stedler Division.
Brooklyn (25-23) scored all the runs they would need in the second inning off Spinner starter Kyle Weiland (2-2, 1.70). With two outs, Cyclone left fielder Jon Servidio doubled and scored one batter later on an error by Lowell (25-21) first baseman Darren Blocker. Brooklyn added two more runs on a single by second baseman J.R. Voyles, who was recently demoted from the Florida State League.
The Cyclones added a run in the seventh on a homerun by catcher Jordan Abruzzo, who was also recently added to Brooklyn’s roster from the Mets’ South Atlantic League affiliate in Savannah.
Brooklyn put the game away with three runs in the ninth of Spinner relievers Mitch Herold and Mike Tomoleoni.
Weiland let up three unearned runs in three innings, striking out three with one walk. Dan Buller pitched two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts, the lone bright spot for the pitching staff tonight. Mike Lee let up a homerun in his first appearance off the seven-day disabled list while all three runs in the ninth were charged to Herold.
The Spinner offense, which has been on a tear during this recent hot stretch, was quieted tonight, picking up just three hits. TD Banknorth Player of the Game Ronald Bermudez collected two hits while Mitch Dening had the other.
Lowell looks to get back on track tomorrow night during Clydesdale Night and Clay Buchholz “No-Hitter” Bobblehead Night, sponsored by Sovereign Bank and Budweiser. Bryan Price (0-1, 1.62) gets the ball from manager Gary DiSarcina, his fifth start of the season, with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. and first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
