Infielders Pitch In

combine for three shutout innings in 18-7 loss to Oneonta
LOWELL, MA – Spinners
infielders Luis Segovia and Aaron Reza combined for three scoreless innings to
close out the game, but it was too little, too late as the Oneonta Tigers
scored 18 runs in the first six innings to defeat the Lowell Spinners on Sunday
night, 18-7. With victories by Vermont and Staten
Island, the Spinners fell to
third place in the Stedler Division and second in the New York-Penn League wild
card race.
Oneonta (26-20) scored one run in the top of the first
and then busted the game wide open with a seven-run second inning against
Spinners starter Felix Doubront (0-1). The Tigers sent twelve men to the plate
and laced six singles in a row in the inning. The Tigers put up three more in
the third, two more in the fourth, one in the fifth inning and four in the
sixth to complete their season-high tally of 18 runs.
Lowell (25-20) finally got on the board in the home half of
the sixth inning when Carlos Fernandez-Oliva doubled into the centerfield gap,
scoring Reza, who began the game as Lowell’s second baseman. The Spinners stirred the crowd with
three runs in the seventh with two home runs to left field—Kade Keowen’s first
professional blast and Yamaico Navarro’s two-run shot.
Lowell whipped the crowd into a frenzy with three runs in
the bottom of the eighth when Lowell loaded the bases and scored on a Will Vazquez walk and
a two-run error by Oneonta second baseman Kody Kaiser. The three runs pulled
Lowell within 11 runs before the Tigers bullpen shut down
the rally. Lowell did not score in the ninth.
Six Lowell pitchers combined to allow 18 runs on 21 hits, both
season highs for the pitching staff. Starter Felix Doubront allowed eight runs
on ten hits in an inning and two-thirds. Adam Blackley was touched for five
runs on seven hits in two and one third innings of relief, and Scott Lonergan
allowed one run on two hits in an inning of work. Eric Beattie continued to
struggle with his command, allowing four runs on one hit, walking three and
throwing two wild pitches.
The heroes of the Lowell bullpen tonight were two infielders, Segovia and
Reza. Segovia, the TD Banknorth Player of the Game, allowed one hit in two
innings of scoreless relief with a strikeout, while Reza struck out two batters
in one inning of relief.
It was the first time a Spinners’ position player came
on to pitch since July 16, 2005, when Dustin Kelly was summoned out of the bullpen
against Mahoning Valley.
The Spinners spread around seven hits, with
Fernandez-Oliva, Keowen and Navarro each picking up two. Reza had the other hit
for Lowell.
Jose Capellan (4-1, 3.26) toes the rubber for manager
Gary DiSarcina tomorrow night on Electronics/Video Game Night, sponsored by
Sal’s Pizza. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and gates open at 5:30 p.m.
As always, standing room tickets are available for every Spinners home game.
